Morality Play
Morality play is a medieval
dramatic form which allegorically presents an ideal Christian life on the
stage. In a morality play, the hero, who represents all mankind, is surrounded by
personifications in virtues, vices, angels, demons, and death- all the forces
of good and evil, who battle for the possession of the hero’s soul. The most
notable example of Morality play is Everyman in which when the title character is summoned
by death he finds that of all his companions- Fellowship, Goods, Kindred,
Beauty, Strength, and Good Deeds- only Good Deeds, though weak form is neglect,
will accompany him on his journey towards judgement. Other well-known morality
play includes The Castle of Perseverance and Mankind.
